“I need to work a job like this because I don’t have any family, so I need to be available for my children.”

Jessica T., Instacart and Grubhub worker, Seattle

I started doing gig work in 2015. I was a single mother who needed the extra income, so I signed up for Grubhub and Instacart. I rely on the flexibility to be there for my four children.

But I’ve faced issues like low pay and high expenses, unfair tipping policies, and discrimination and harassment on the job.

The pay has gotten so low, I’m unable to provide everything my family needs.

I need to work a job like this because I don’t have any family, so I need to be available for my children. Gig companies distribute bonuses higher-paying batches to new workers, leaving less work available for longtime workers on the app like myself. I can’t afford childcare or basics like rent and bills, and I can’t save money — I’ve had below $100 in my bank account in the last year.

We need the PayUp policy now because then I will be paid fairly for all my work.
