Flexibility

Gig workers deserve flexibility.

Under this PayUp policy, gig workers will now get the flexibility apps have promised — the right to reject or accept offers and work when we want without penalty, and be free from management control.

The details:

App companies talk a lot about the value of flexibility — but for workers, it’s much more than a talking point. And every day, apps come up with new ways to undermine the flexibility they’ve promised. Under PayUp, gig workers’ flexibility is guaranteed by law:

  • The right to reject or accept offers, without penalty. That means apps can’t require a specific “acceptance rate” for workers to stay on the app or get access to good offers, and they can’t take any adverse action that punishes workers based on the offers we reject.

  • The right to work when we choose, and log on and off as we please. That means apps can’t require a minimum or maximum number of hours, and they can’t punish workers for missing “shifts” we sign up for in advance.

  • No penalties for canceling a job with cause. That includes canceling when a job takes substantially more time or miles than estimated, or it’s impossible to complete (like if a store is closed or a customer’s address is wrong), or if the worker has reported harassment.

This policy goes into effect January 13th, 2024, under CB 120294.
