#PayUp Celebration and What's Next

Workers know how to win, and we proved at our recent #PayUp celebration that we also know how to party. In celebration of Seattle gig workers winning first-in-the-nation protections against unjust deactivations, last month we had a #PayUp Party to celebrate the gig workers who have been leaders in organizing their coworkers and speaking out, and the organizers, community members, and legislators who partnered with us to win these rights to a better workplace we know we all deserve. Thank you for organizing with us and celebrating with us!

Gig workers through the #PayUp Campaign have been organizing for years to win urgently needed improvements to our working conditions. After we WON a minimum wage standard, reliable flexibility, and true transparency in Seattle last year, and permanent paid sick time protections, we fought for and won our next priority: ending unjust deactivations.

Companies now have to:

  • Inform workers upfront about what could get us deactivated,

  • Notify workers before we get deactivated with a written explanation of the reasoning and evidence that triggered the deactivation,

  • Establish an internal appeals process with human review that allows workers to challenge deactivations.

What’s Next:

Now, we need to win an equitable city budget that dedicates funding for enforcement of these laws, so our wins can actually have their intended impact on our lives. We know that apps will skirt the rules if they can get away with it, so we’ll be advocating to ensure that the tools for holding apps accountable can be put to practical use in defense of gig worker rights.
